Understanding the Role of a School Counselor: What does a school counselor do?
The school counselors at Ridgewood have developed a comprehensive school counseling program to address the needs of the students. School counselors are vital members of the education team. They help all students in the areas of academic achievement, personal/social development and career development, ensuring today's students become the productive, well-adjusted adults of tomorrow. School counselors uphold the ethical and professional standards and promote the development of the school counseling program based on the following areas of the American School Counseling Association (ASCA) National Model: foundation, delivery, management and accountability. Some of the responsibilities of the counselors at Ridgewood are: Individual Counseling with students Small Group Counseling with students Classroom Guidance Teacher Assistance Team (TAT) Chairperson Exceptional Children's (EC) Program Contact English as a Second Language (ESL) Contact Student Government Association (SGA) Advisor Student Leadership Team Advisor/Coordinator School Improvement Team (SIT) Chairperson 504 Coordinator OASIS Partner Contact Coordination of school activities: Red Ribbon Week, Character Kid Program, monthly Counselor's Corner Newsletter, Salvation Army Food Drive, Awards Day, Career Fair (5th grade), Staff Angel Tree, Terrific Kid with the Winterville Kiwanis Consulting with outside programs and agencies to assist students and families: Department of Social Services, Mental Health Care Providers, Physicians, the Mediation Center of Eastern North Carolina For the 2009/2010 school year, Mrs. Salter will work primarily with kindergarten, fourth and fifth grade students. Mrs. Hendrix will work primarily with first, second, and third grade students.
