Ridgewood Elementary School Counseling Department
Character Education and
The Seven Habits of Highly Effective People
at Ridgewood Elementary School:
"CHARACTER IN ACTION!"
"Good character is more to be praised than outstanding talent. Most talents are, to some extent, a gift. Good character, by contrast, is not given to us. We have to build it piece by piece~ by thought, choice, and determination."
Character Education is necessary in the development of productive, well adjusted, and happy citizens. At Ridgewood we understand and value the importance of teaching children about making good choices and having strong character. We have developed a school-wide Character Education program that teaches the traits suggested by the NC Department of Education, as well as emphasizes "Character in Action," teaching students to make choices based on good character. Our school-wide character program will focus on teaching The Seven Habits of Highly Effective People (Stephen R. Covey) to our students.
Each month we focus on a new habit, and at the end of the month, a "Character Kid" is selected by each homeroom teacher. The "Character Kids" receive a prize and certificate. The students pictures are displayed on the bulletin board at the front entrance of the school throughout the following month.
For more information on each habit, and how to work with your child on the habits at home, please look for the Counselor's Corner Newsletter that comes home the first Wednesday of each month. If you would like to view the current newsletter, please click on the link for the current month.
