C.M. EPPES A.G. SYLLABUS

THEME:  CHANGE

Welcome to C.M. Eppes!! This year, the over-all theme for the AG lessons is CHANGE.  Of course, the biggest CHANGE for some of you is coming to C.M. Eppes School, and we are delighted to have the all newcomers!!  Current plans for AG service will include 90 minutes of small groups in my room.  The overview below reveals the many fascinating topics included in the plans!  Time permitting, we will cover the following areas of study:

INTRODUCTORY UNIT:  THE UNIVERSALITY OF CHANGE

The Universality of Change

o       How the language, phrases, and generalities of change are a part of everyday life

o       How change is necessary for family relations and general circumstances (empathy)

o       How people throughout history are catalysts for change (i.e. Rosa Parks, etc)

o       How psychologists and psychiatrists study change (based on Freud)

o       How emotional imagery and dreams can reflect personal change

The Science of Change through Physics and Chemistry

o       How pendulums measure change

o       How catalysts can cause physical and chemical changes in matter

o       How temperature differences can change the density of matter

o       How physiological changes impact the relationship between exercise, blood pressure, and oxygen consumption

o       How changes in the earth’s atmosphere affects the changes in weather and how the change can be predicted

o       How chemical reactions change atmospheric gases that in turn change our atmospheric conditions

Early Childhood Changes and Development

o       How human learning changes from childhood to adolescence

o       How learning stages can be measured through simple intelligence tests administered during a visit to a kindergarten

o       How data collected on child development can be compared with other ages and learning stages using Piaget’s scale of developmental learning

o       How culture affects value systems

Adolescence and Developmental Changes

o       How anthropologists determine primitive societies who create changes among their members by using rites of passage

o       How the classic theories of personality development due to birth order show that how people change may be predictable

o       How Faulkner’s Barn Burning is a literary example of archetypal change between adolescence and adulthood

Adulthood and Changes

o       How various cultures accept non-standard behaviors and tolerate abnormal psychology

o       How the trial of Charles Guiteau, President Garfield’s assassin, applied the legality of the insanity plea

o       How intelligence tests throughout history have been used to measure intellect and how they have changed throughout the years

Year-long project

Throughout this year, your student will be asked to select, monitor, record, and graph an occurrence that is predicted to change periodically throughout this school year. The first reading should begin mid- September and will run through the second week of May.   FYI:  The selected change must be teacher-approved.

****Other TAG service includes guest teaching in various classrooms as my time permits plus curriculum assistance to any other staff who requests it.

We are going to have a fabulous year!!

Keep checking this site for updates to the curriculum.
