examining personal conflict and typical reactions to conflicts. Lesson II: Political

States Statistical Abstract as a resource, and actual statisticians tools as
the procedure, predict the Presidential election results. Lesson III: Broader
Consequences...read
several biographical sketches of famous people from history and analyze the
positive and negative consequences of the conflicts. Lesson IV: Bias in
Conflict...detect
and interpret bias and point of view in a dramatic confrontation between two
individuals. UNIT I:
THE INVISIBLE WORLD Lesson I: Salem Witch Trials...recreate
the climate of the Salem courtrooms and try to understand why mass hysteria
takes place.
Lesson II:
Color and Light...discover
how the eye perceives varying light sources and colors and optical illusions. Lesson III: Microbiology…gather
sample swabs from around the school and grow bacteria on agar plates in order to
classify colony types and characteristics. UNIT II: OPPOSING
FORCES Lesson I: Charles I...retry
Charles I in our court. Do kings
have the power to rule absolutely and control the lives of their subjects? Conflict develops when the British challenge their king. Lesson II: Freedom of Speech...argue
and decide, as attorneys and Supreme Court justices, recent free speech cases. Lesson III: Bill of
Rights...research into history and landmark cases that protect
our personal rights as written in the first Ten Amendments of the US
Constitution. Lesson IV: Slavery...explore
the historical conflicts about American slavery and seek to develop a personal
interpretation through studying a variety of primary sources. UNIT III: TAR RIVER
UNDER SIEGE Lesson I: River and
Community...learn
about the importance of the Tar River to our community ad the various causes of
water pollution as part of the continuing lessons concerning river protection
and awareness. Lesson II: Wetland
Issues...apply
knowledge acquired through introductory lesson to define and debate issues
concerning wetland development. Lesson III: Side
Effects of H20 Pollution...investigate the side effects of water pollution such as
dinoflagellates, algae blooms, and local fish kills and make educated choices
about human impact and wetlands. Lesson IV: “Another
Enemy of the People”...read
an Ibsen-based play to discover how a simple micro conflict can escalate..decide
how the play should end and explore possible outcomes to see how a small
conflict about water can expand into a major one if you don’t watch out. Lesson V: To the
River...voyage to
River Park North with other Pitt County AIG classes for a full day of river
awareness and protection activities. Lesson VI: Land
Development...role-play
an activity to synthesize river and wetlands knowledge and apply it to a
culminating activity to resolve a conflict concerning wetland development. UNIT IV: UNIVERSAL
PATTERNS OF LIFE Lesson I: Into
the Woods...analyze
Stephen Sondheim’s hilarious play to discover how everyone must negotiate
certain conflicts in order to grow up; explore the archetypal conflicts and
characters reflected in traditional folk and fairy tales. Lesson II: Not Out

Decisions...examine
choices American leaders faced concerning Vietnam in the 1950’s and 1960’s

raucous trial of the protesters who disrupted the 1968 Democratic Convention-and
the country- discover how conflict in Vietnam broadened into other social and
